Danielle Babbles About Books - The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Rating: 4/5 stars

Review: I think my favorite type of fantasy is the kind where it’s just a story, hopefully an exciting story, that just happens to take place in a fantasy world rather than a fantasy story in which the protagonist has to save said fantasy world. Granted much of the plot involves saving the city from disaster but it wasn’t on the same scale as the typical save-the-world fantasy and it plays out differently. But The Lies of Locke Lamora is a great example of the first type of fantasy story. I was impressed by the thoroughly morally gray characters and the mix of comedy, heist story, and heroic adventure. I really liked the gentlemen bastards and their dynamic as a group. And I was very impressed by the worldbuilding. I like stories with a lot of magic but I also liked that the magic was rather understated. Locke doesn’t need to be a magician to fight his battles. Overall it as a very exciting story and I’m anxious to get to the next book.

Favorite Quote: “Someday, Locke Lamora,” he said, “someday, you’re going to fuck up so magnificently, so ambitiously, so overwhelmingly that the sky will light up and the moons will spin and the gods themselves will shit comets with glee. And I just hope I’m still around to see it.”
“Oh please,” said Locke. “It’ll never happen.”
